Hin Muang

Hin Muang

Two hundred meters away from Hin Daeng is the fabled Hin Muang. Hin Muang represents Thailand's deepest and steepest vertical wall, dropping to 70 or 80 meters in places.

The reef at Hin Muang is probably only 200 meters long by 20 meters wide and resembles a long baguette. The top starts at 12 meters and it is advisable to find the mooring buoy before descent as surface currents can be strong until you get down to the reef itself.

Sadly, although Hin Muang gets its name from the purple anemones that once covered the surface, a sharp drop in water temperatures in 2006 due to an upwelling of cold waters from the Andaman Ocean bleached much of the soft and hard corals down to a depth of about 20 meters.

However don't be disappointed, chances of seeing Manta rays and Whalesharks cruising over the pinnacle are very high and recent monitoring has noted an increase in new coral settlement and fish activity.

The Dive Trip
Due to its distance from Phi Phi Island Hin Muang dive trips are conducted from a large speedboat using 3 Yamaha outboard engines. Maximum people including staff is 15 so book in advance.

This is a two dove trip that will include Hin Muang and Hin Daeng.

The dive trip starts at 07:30 a.m. at the Adventure Club base office on Phi Phi. From there the trip takes just under one hour on a calm day and there are opportunities to see dolphins on the way.

Between the two dives, refreshments and lunch are provided and for anyone with more energy, snorkeling over the reef can dish up a very personal encounter.

The trip is usually back to base by 15:00 p.m.
